When you type the word “Insulin” into google, you see a bunch of web md and diabetes.org articles. If you want to scare yourself into a serious illness, click around and read some comments. You might self diagnose into the hospital (Dont do this).
If you want to seriously throw harder, in less time. The hormone insulin needs to be one of the most important hormones you consider.
Yes insulin.
Insulin is the same hormone that is known for increasing fat synthesis and causing long term type 2 diabetes (the scary stuff that is hurting people).
I explain why fatness or diabetes won’t happen to you in the Throw Cheese Nutrient System courses. Remember, you are an elite athlete. You belong in a different nutrition category.
Insulin is produced in the pancreas and released when several stimuli are detected. Insulin stimulates DNA and RNA which increases the stimulation for the protein synthesis process.
Protein synthesis (also called protein biosynthesis) is the process whereby biological cells generate new proteins. This is a BIG need for muscle growth. When you think of protein synthesis, think of new amino acids being linked together to create new proteins.
Protein synthesis has two steps, Transcription and Translation. Transcription is the coping of the mRNA from DNA. Messenger RNA (mRNA) copies the original DNA and leaves the nucleus of the cell and is attached to a ribosome to where it begins translation. During translation, amino acids are linked together.
A Penn State University Medical school study showed that insulin stimulates ribosome’s that assist in protein synthesis. Ribosomes are a work horse that serve are very important role in protein synthesis. A ribosome is a large and complex molecular machine found in all living cells. Ribosomes are the primary construction site of protein synthesis.
Ribosomes are like the manufacturing facility for the new protein. They aid in translation of mRNA (messenger RNA) into new proteins by linking amino acids together. Insulin increases the cellular content of ribosomes to enlarge the capacity for protein synthesis.
A study by the Texas Health Science Center in Galveston found that added insulin immediately after exercise lead to a 67 percent greater protein synthesis in the muscle cell. Which means you the athlete, who is trying to maximize muscle growth, must take advantage of the insulin hormone.
In summary, more stimulated insulin following a workout, leads to an increase in protein synthesis. With proper timing and dosage, the hormone insulin will take you from good to great.
This is just the beginning…
Stay tuned for the next insulin lesson.
